PUPILS from a Cheetham school have received good citizen awards for their efforts to improve their environment.

The six children from Temple Primary School gave up their break and lunch times to help the school's health eatiing scheme by carrying out a survey and setting targets for the school to meet.

All pupils have also take part in a litter patrol, helped with playground supervision and helped out around the school.

The good citizen awards were sponsored by Manchester-based preserves manufacturer Duerrs in response to government plans to introduce compulsory citizenship lessons in schools.

Mark Duerr, the firm's managing director, presented certificates, t-shirts and back packs full of goodies to the six winners.

The school will now be entered into the grand final to take place in July when they could win ?1,000 to spend on books and equipment.

Temple Primary School headteacher Mrs Morton said: "Our pupils were delighted with the news that they had won the award. All too often the children are encouraged to improve their school and its surroundings but aren't rewarded for their efforts."
